It is very likely that aerial spirit-creatures are as varied as corporeal creatures of flesh and bone.
An aerial is wind with a will. They are felt as cohesive air, but the actual material of the air is not the aerial's true body, it is merely ordinary air being manipulated, as if by telekinetics, by the aerial. The aerial is a spirit, with no real corporeal body. This is why winds can "die down" and then start again, often from a different location; the aerial has "dropped" one "air-body" and animated another. Aerials can just as easily use gasses other than air; some show an affinity for smoke.
Some suggest that aerials emanate from other realms of existence, such as the elemental plane of air; most believe they are a natural part of the world, despite their lack of a permanent (or "dedicated") corporeal body.
Most aerials have only very simple, reacted intelligence; these motivate the normal winds to which we are all accustomed. These are just how air moves. Some aerials develop greater intelligence, equal to that of a dog or cat. These make excellent familiars. Some, however, have true intelligence, and are Folk of a very wide range of "species," if that term is applicable to Aerials.
