Green Apes could be Folk if they were just a bit more intelligent, or at least able to organize a bit more. They live in thatch tree huts and use simple tools but are uncomfortable with fire. Green Apes are chimp-sized or somewhat larger; exceptional individuals, such as bull males, may be as large as gorillas, but rather more lithe, able to branchiate readily through the trees. Their fur is generally green, but may be patterned with yellows, browns, gray or black, apparently a purposeful camouflaging decoration done with natural dyes or bleaching agents.
There are rumors of whole tribes of gorilla-sized Green Apes, of somewhat greater intelligence. These may supply the unusually large individuals thought to be "bull males" to the tribes of chimp-sized Green Apes in their region. These rather more reclusive "giant Green Apes" are sometimes said to have surprisingly skilled shaman, but this is probably the result of some more advanced sentient Folk who employ the Apes.
With their long arms, strength (greater than a Human's), and impressive dexterity, Green Apes can throw stones as accurately and with as much effect as a sling; they are bright enough to hide caches of stones up in the trees throughout their range. Their tools may be crude but they are certainly effective enough. Common materials are stone and bone, vine and wood. Armaments equal: 40% bludgeons, 25% daggers, 25% short swords, 20% picks (in addition to all slinging rocks). These "weapons" are likely to actually be nutcrackers, scrapers, and thatch-splitters only secondarily being used as weapons; they aren't as war-like as the ignorant (or exploitation-minded) would lead us to believe.
There are usually (90%) a few at their village at any given time, mostly nursing mothers and elderly tool making specialists. When resting (these diurnal creatures take mid-day siestas and mid-night naps), all but a few scouts or lookouts will be present.
Green Apes like "trinkets;" they may trade valuable bird plumes, flowers vital to perfumery, or rare fruits, all items inaccessible to any creature less agile, in return for scraps of bright cloth, shiny metal items, or beads.
