Scaled Apes are reptile-mammal hybrids. They both lay eggs and suckle their young. There are a range of types, from the smaller, more monkey-like to the larger gorilla equivalents, and even up to Colossal "King Kongs" or Behemoth sized individuals who could challenge Godzilla. (Not successfully, mind you - no radioactive breath weapon.) The scales may truly be reptilian, or they may be pangolin-style mammalian analogs.
"Armored Apes" have hides that would put a rhino to shame, heavy slabs of tough leather studded with knots or even spikes of bone. Some have plates more like turtle shell than mere armadillo. Other, more lithe varieties (or individuals) have finer scales, but still as tough as chain mail.
The green-scaled Ketch Folk, described in the Monster Manual II, which SEE, are clearly sapients descended from a cross of green ape and scaled ape.
