A creature of living stone, the basilisk frog is a sad creature, for, like any frog, it wishes only to dine upon mosquitoes and other buggy vermin, and thus be a useful tool of Nature. However, its evil breeding has given it the "ossifying touch," such that every time it catches a meal with its whip-quick tongue, that meal, as with any fleshy object the poor little frog may touch, is turned to stone; while the basilisk frog, being made of stone, is indeed able to crunch down and digest this meal, it is most unsatisfying, having none of the buggy flavor and juiciness the poor frog craves. Its stony nature will not let it die, so it lives and suffers.
The basilisk frog is not of natural origin. Rather, it is the by-blow of basilisks. When basilisks bathe, they may release eggs or seed in to the water. These cross with innocent, simple frogs, resulting in an infestation of basilisk frogs in the whole of the area about waters downstream of a nest of basilisks.
