The cockatrix is a variation of the cockatrice, likely with a goodly portion of basilisk in its ancestry. The cockatrix has the body and tail of a crocodile; its three to eight pairs of legs are midway between those of a crocodile and a dragon. The long and dexterous neck is a blend rooster and dragon, and its head, long-jawed and needle-toothed, is likewise a mix of rooster and dragon. The wings may be either feathered or membranous.
The cockatrix is rather heavy bodied and a poor flier; clipping the wings will prevent any flying, should someone desire to make a ground-bound guardian beast of it. The cockatrix, with its dragon-jaws, is a sturdier fighter than the cockatrice.
Some cockatrixi ossify by touch, as does the cockatrice, but others ossify by gaze, as does the basilisk.
As with the cockatrice, there are "lesser cockatrixi," no larger than a normal barnyard fowl, and crown-crested "greater cockatrixi," or "king cockatrixi," the size of a pony.
SEE also Basilisk and Cockatrice; the cockatrix is but their most common hybrid; they are all similarly immune to ossification.
