Daydreams are life forms from a non-corporeal dimension. They can access our energies through our dreams. They do so to feed upon our emotions.
Where nightmares feed upon the negative energies of terror, daydreams feed on pleasurable thoughts. Thus, Daydreams wish to inspire more pleasant thoughts. They may do so by sorting through a mind's contents and presenting what will please; this may be the source of many a brilliant "inspiration." Daydreams may thus be a form of Genius (in the Roman mythological sense of the word; and inspiring spirit, often a minor household god.)
Some Daydreams function as messengers between gods and mortals; a priest, seer, or diviner may be needed to attempt interpretation of such divine Daydreams.
Other daydreams are not so benign. They can become an obsession, driving their host to seek their ever more-enthralling pleasures. The result can be seeming senility, madness, or reduction to a catatonic or autistic state. There may be some confusion or even overlap between some Daydreams and certain manifestations thought to be leanan Sidhe. (The laenan Sidhe are a sort of Celtic muse-faerie-vampire who drain to death those they inspire to the greatest artistic heights.)
Consider as an example the demise of "King Kuranes" (SEE H.P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands writings and Chaosium Inc.'s Call of Cthulhu Dreamlands publications.) Once a spirited and energetic young man of wealth, Kuranes tumbled down a steep slope into drugs and poverty, finally dieing in desperate straights. No doubt his friends thought him lost to an overwhelming seduction by daydreams.
No doubt there is a whole ecosystem of dreams in their home dimension, perhaps with competing factions. Daydreams are very likely from the same alien dimension as nightmares, possibly from different realms, such as Idlers, Freudians, and Divines; SEE Nightmare entry. The Daydreams is but one of three so-called "dream riders." The other two are dream tick vermin and Dream Spiders, or Psychic Spinners, which SEE.
