Real eagles range from scarcely larger than a chicken to upwards of 7' wingtip to wingtip. Despite this, real eagles are not able to lift over 9 lb. Famed for their eyesight, they can spot a rabbit's twitch from great heights.
Eagles are renowned for their pair-bonded loyalty and guard their nests ferociously. Many add to the same nests for generations; they may weigh tons.
Eagles are valued as hunting animals, but never become truly tame.
Fantasy eagles can lift greater weights, are more intelligent, and can be thoroughly domesticated. Fantasy eagles, being brighter, also tend to collect bright, shiny things (as crows do) to impress their mates. The may be the same size as real eagles, somewhat larger, or as vast as rocs. Fantasy eagles (or alien eagle-analog avian predator Folk) may also be more sociable and use pack-hunting techniques; it is speculated that the coordination of group-hunting spurs on the development of their greater intelligence.
Hawks and falcons are similar but smaller. During the medieval period, there were strict formulas determining which kinds of falcons (including eagles) persons of a given rank could use.
Impressive real eagles include:
Sea Eagles, such as Steller's Sea Eagle, are beautiful pale grey or white birds found in the arctic.
Bald and Golden eagles of North America; found from the Arctic through Mexico. May congregate in great flocks about prime salmon rivers.
Harpy Eagle or Winged Wolf (Aztec name) of Central and South American jungles; feasts on sloths, macaws and monkeys.
Philippine Monkey-Eating Eagle
