Sometimes referred to as "ghost goo" (or "icktoplasm"), ectoplasm is a gelatinous colloidal pseudo-material residue occasionally left by some materialized apparitions. If ectoplasm is deposited in an area in sufficient quantity or frequency, it may arise to continuous spontaneous actualization, acting as though it were a true corporeal substance.
Being an inherently ghostly substance, such self-actualized ectoplasm may take on animate characteristics. Frequently, this includes behaviors with a seeming "motivation," often inspired by the haunting(s) which produced them. This results in an ectoplasm pseudo-ghost.
Some such active ectoplasm may act much as other amorphous colloids (which SEE) - but with ghost-like characteristics. Thus, they may have a "contact attack" such as burning cold, energy draining, converting hope into suicidal despair, bone-to-cartilage, flesh-to-jelly, make-permanently-ethereal, or other ghostly effects.
Actualized ectoplasm is likely to be able to pass through material objects, especially those which were not present at the time of the originating haunt's death. If injured or otherwise dispelled, or exorcized, the ectoplasm may simply wait in the "beyond" and re-materialize later. It may "choose" whether to let most materials effect them at all; silver or "cold" iron seem effective in many cases, although rowan wood and certain other sacred substances have been reported effective against particular individual instances of ectoplasm materialization.
