Serpent-tongued frogs probe with their muscular tongues deep into tunnels and burrows. This is dangerous work, so they have developed armor on their tongue tips. They also grow a reserve of extra flesh in their throats, so if their tongue is severed, they can grow a replacement tongue as quickly as a foot per hour.
The tongues of these frogs are quite varied. "Tentacle-tongues" have one, two, or six separate grasping tongues, complete with suckers, to grasp and reel in prey. Others have spear-like tips with reverse-pointing barbs to snare prey and drag it back to the gaping jaws. "Man-catchers" have double or quadruple, inward-facing hooks, very like the medieval weapon of the same name. The true serpent-tongued frogs have actual articulated jaws at the ends of their tongues.
While most serpent-tongued frogs are well camouflaged, a sudden flash of bright colours, such as by displaying unfurled toe webs, indicates one of several varieties having envenomed stingers in the tongue tip(s).
Spending long hours half buried, probing for prey, can leave a frog vulnerable. As a result, some species have developed segmented horn armor over their bodies as well.
Serpent-tongued frogs are excellent burrowers through soil and even gravel. They may excavate quite an extensive system of pits and tunnels, providing alluring homes for prey or shelters for their own siestas.
