Exquisite in plumage that glitters like iridescent jewels, these sanguivorous birds are a vision of beauty fit for paradise - but their flocks presage death by exsanguination; a flock can drain a Human in minutes.
Prey is often rendered defenseless by the combination of a daze-inducing dance and hypnotic humming. Captive birds have great entertainment value, but may be too dangerous to keep.
Humming bird bones are fragile. Sanguivorous hummers have more cartilage than bone, some being quite rubbery, so they can withstand blows, simply bouncing away. Further, they heal quite rapidly, some even using regeneration; a flock that is battered and defeated one day may return in full strength a very few days later.
The Owl-Eyed and Long-Lancet Hummingbirds are nocturnal varieties that specialize in feeding on the sleeping. Unlike most hummingbirds, they are good walkers. They sense prey, by sight and infra-vision (using heat-sensing pits located about the beak base) and land near by. They then creep close. An extremely gentle licking with numbing salival solution soon renders the selected patch of skin insensitive. The bird can then hop right on, clinging with feet and inner wing surfaces (lined with feathers modified into wee Velcro-like hooks) and slip the lancet beak right in to a vein - without disturbing the sleeper.
