These are actually the larval form of Glaciures, which SEE. As they remain in larval form for centuries, and even reproduce in larval form, they are treated as if they are an independent population; perhaps some are.
Young ice slugs need an environment that is initially cold, but once established, a population of ice slugs will, by their own cooling power, keep their environment cold. A swarm of ice slugs can turn a cavern in to a walk-in freezer. This is quite useful - but the slugs may attack intruders who start warming up the place, such as by carrying torches, or producing excessive body heat.
Ice slugs attack by sticking on to their enemy and inflicting frostbite damage. While the damage inflicted by a single slug is slight, they attack as a horde, are very resistant to damage, and are extremely difficult to remove.
