These are much like the Waveries, which SEE. (Sorry, I can't remember the story and author who deserve credit for the Waveries. If you know, please remind me.)
The radiation leech is an energy life form that infects stockpiles of radioactive materials and consumes their emitted energy. This can be useful, where there is a need to contain radiation, but it will also sap the power supplied by an engine powered by radioactive fuels.
Systems known to be or suspected of being infected must post warnings; the prudent captain can then set up special shields to prevent infection of his/her/its ship. As these specialized shields are bulky, require specialized staff, and are expensive to run, it would be highly impractical to install them as permanent fixtures on ships which do not regularly call upon radiation leech infected systems.
It is impossible to cleanse a star system once its sun becomes host to radiation leeches.
