First described by Gary Gygax in the "Monster Manual," the Shambling Mound seems a part of the rotting muck, compost pile, or other vegetation from which its horrifying, slimy vegetable bulk rises. Being silent and extremely well camouflaged, they inevitably enjoy the benefits of surprise.
A shambling mound may wrap its prey in a bear-like hug, burrowing in rootlets to suck out the luscious fluids. The larger the shambler, the more likely it is to have additional limbs. Some have tentacle-like vines, instead of or in addition to their regular clubbing / smothering limbs.
Given nutritious fluids or an electrical input, shamblers may grow astonishingly quickly, healing damage, gaining bulk, and even growing additional limbs. Shamblers generally regenerate very quickly; all damage is healed within a day, even with minimal feeding.
Being a mass of animate vegetation, its few vitals buried deep in its tough, fibrous bulk, the shambling mound is extremely resistant to ordinary physical attacks.
While shamblers may mock Humanoid form, especially those which have had extensive contact with Humanoids, there is nothing particularly Humanoid about them.
So-called "Weedy Shamblers" are found in a range of aquatic habitats, from the sea bottom to inland rivers.
